Anna Firth MP for Southend West took the Southend music sensation, the Music Man Project to Westminster, London to perform at Number 10 Downing Street.
The group, founded by David Stanley in Southend 20 years ago is a passionate project to bring musical education to people with learning disabilities, encouraging an inclusive and diverse group of all ages and abilities. The group have only grown since Stanley began and now other regions such as Kent also have their own Music Man Projects.
The visit to Number 10 was to perform and teach a music workshop with Mrs Murty, the Prime Minister’s wife. However, this was not the full extent of the visit as the group were joined by the Prime Minister to celebrate their music.
The group have partnered with the Royal Marines in the past for performances at the Royal Albert Hall but were yet to wow the Prime Minister which they absolutely did!
After the visit, Anna said:
‘The talent in this group is beyond words, the Prime Minister was joining in with the instrument playing and dancing along with the students.’
Music Man Founder David Stanley said:
'“I was so grateful for the opportunity to run a music workshop in Downing Street. My work as both Disability and Access Ambassador and as leader of The Music Man Project has given me some truly incredible experiences which I will cherish forever. Who would have thought that when I started with one student in 1999 that I’d be singing 'High Low Gangnam Style' at the top of my voice while my students danced with the Prime Minister’s wife at 10 Downing Street! I was told to turn my piano down as 'someone' was on an important call downstairs! The Prime Minister soon joined us, much to the excitement of my students!”
“I’m deeply proud that the UK leads the way in accessible arts and culture, particularly through the wonderful Music Man Project – based here in Southend.”
“The Music Man Project Global Ambassadors are extraordinary. They never fail to inspire every time they perform. Their success in 10 Downing Street follows an impressive few months for the charity - primetime TV appearances, a standing ovation from the King and a concert tour of San Diego!”
