The Southend West MP was delighted to address the Evening of Solidarity with the Iranian People held on the 18th of February. Anna has been a vocal critic against the human rights violations in Iran, having recently addressed the Iran Human Rights Conference in the Houses of Parliament.
Held at the Iveagh Hall, the Anglo-Iranian Academics Society chose Southend as their location to address the fight against the Iranian regime and the importance of the UK standing side-by-side with the innocent women, children and protestors who have been targeted by the Iranian state.
Protests in Iran began in July of 2021 and escalated since, challenging the imposition of Islamic law, a continuing economic crisis, lack of freedom of expression and violating of women’s rights.
During the evening, Anna was asked to address the challenges the Iranian people face against oppression during a keynote speech as attendees enjoyed a traditional meal served by Iranian-British dual nationals.
The evening also included opening remarks from the President of the Anglo-Iranian Society, Azadeh Sabeti, and a moving tribute to Sir David Amess who was co-chairman of the British Committee for Iranian Freedom.
Anna Firth said,
“It was a privilege to attend the evening of solidarity with the Iranian people, speaking on the work in effort to give women, children and innocent protestors a better chance of freedom from oppression.”
“The appalling and tyrannical regime in Iran must be stopped, and it was so powerful to see Southend residents stand behind that message.”
