Southend West MP Anna Firth has condemned the levels of violence against women. Anna visited a powerful art installation in parliament to draw attention to the continuing high levels of violence against women.
Between 2013 and 2020, 1,077 women were killed by men. In Essex alone, 15 women were murdered by men between 2018 and 2021. The Crime Survey for England and Wales showed that an estimated 1.6 million women aged16 to 74 years experienced domestic abuse in the last year. Shockingly, only 24% of domestic abuse related offences in Essex lead to an arrest.
Anna visited a powerful art installation in Parliament that drew attention to the levels of violence faced by women. The work of art, which consisted of 8 ceramic plates placed on a black mirrored table, featured the names of all 1,077 women murdered between 2013 and 2020. It was created by artist Wilma Woolf, and seeks to present the levels of violence faced by women in a dramatic and visual form.
Commenting, Anna said:
“I was shocked to learn the sheer levels of violence against women. As Wilma’s work of art showed, levels of violence have not reduced over the past decade. I want to use my new position as a female Member of Parliament to draw attention to this shocking crime, and to work to find a permanent solution to reducing the threats that women face.”
