Southend West MP Anna Firth met with former Secretary of State Baroness Morgan to discuss her proposals to amend the Dangerous Dogs Act.
Anna Firth is spearheading a new campaign to make dog-on-dog attacks a criminal offence. The campaign started when Millie the Bichon Frise was savagely mauled to death by another dog in Chalkwell Park. Extraordinarily someone can receive a prison sentence if they steal someone’s dog, but not if their dog kills another person’s dog. Mrs Firth immediately set out to close this baffling loophole in the law. She has already met with a number of charities, including the RSPCA and Blue Cross.
Baroness Morgan, formerly the Member of Parliament for Loughborough, led a similar campaign some years ago. Unfortunately she was unsuccessful in changing the law, but she remains committed to solving this issue. Baroness Morgan gave Anna her full support in her campaign, and offered a lot of practical advice for the new MP.
Speaking after the meeting, Anna said:
“I am thrilled to have the support of my colleague Baroness Morgan. When she was in the House of Commons, Nicky ran a fantastic campaign to close this loophole in the law, and I want to continue with this, and eventually get the justice that Millie and all the dogs who are killed and injured by other dogs deserve.”
