“On behalf of the people of Southend West I am very pleased that a full life order has been imposed for the horrific and senseless murder of Sir David Amess. Sir David was a wonderful MP who represented the very best of our democratic system: exceptionally kind, decent, a friend to all, his dedication to his constituents was second to none. It has been an enormous privilege to follow in his footsteps and he remains sorely missed; but, today, all our thoughts and prayers are with Lady Amess and her five children. Despite the most unimaginable loss, they have conducted themselves throughout this harrowing and horrendous trial with the utmost dignity. Our sincere hope is that now the sentence has been passed, they will be able to begin the long and painful process of coming to terms with their unbearable loss, in peace.”
“Finally, I would like to thank all those who provided statements, in particular, Sir David’s staff who were forced to re-live horrific events and did so with great courage and fortitude. Also the Jury for their public service, in particular, for coming to their verdict as swiftly as possible in all the circumstances.”
“Sir David’s incredible work and legacy will live on through the many charities and good causes he championed here in Southend. Most importantly, his memory will burn brightly forever as the Founder of the City of Southend, he fought so hard to secure”.
