Yesterday, Anna Firth, Member of Parliament for Southend West, attended events hosted by Guide Dogs UK and the Royal National Institute of Blind People in Parliament.
The reception for Guide Dogs UK was hosted by Will Quince MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families, and heard speakers with visual impairment conditions talk about the difficulties and prejudice they faced during their education. Anna, as a member of the House of Commons Education Select Committee, is passionate about education in Southend West and was interested to hear about what can be done to improve the education and well-being of students with visual impairments through the use of assistance dogs.
Anna then attended an event hosted for the Royal National Institute of Blind People and the LEGO group about the use of “braille bricks” to support blind children in schools.
Speaking after the events, Anna said:
“I could not be more delighted to have been to these fantastic events in Parliament. Guide Dogs UK and the RNIB are doing incredible work to support those who are blind or who have visual impairment conditions, particularly during their education.
“As the founder of the Invicta National Academy, I am passionate about education and the incredible schools that we are lucky to have in Southend West. I will continue to champion causes related to education and Southend on the House of Commons Education Select Committee.”
