On the 4th October, Anna Firth MP spoke at the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF) event at the Conservative Party Conference 2022. The CAWF event was a tribute to the late Sir David Amess MP who was a passionate animal rights activist. Several MPs and well-known figures spoke at the prestigious event, such as neighbouring MP, Mark Francois, Minister Andrea Jenkyns, CAWF Patron Theresa Villiers and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
At the event, all the speakers spoke movingly about their late friend Sir David, mentioning his warmth and positivity, and his lifelong love for animals. Sir David was one of the first Conservative MPs to fight so passionately about animal welfare issues, and he ensured animals had a protector in Parliament. He took every opportunity to raise animal welfare issues and defied the party to support bills against fox hunting, and was the Patron of the Conservatives Against Fox Hunting for over 10 years. Sir David is said to have been a key influencer in the ban of fox hunting.
Anna Firth MP, Sir David’s successor, is now following his footsteps being so passionate in animal welfare issues, and is hoping to uphold his legacy.
Anna said at the event,
“I am very proud to be a supporter of CAWF and their fantastic campaigns, and ensuring they are enacted into law would be a fine way to honour Sir David. There is no doubt that he would have continued this vital work in Parliament – his final contribution in the House of Commons, almost exactly a year ago, was to call for a debate to commemorate World Animal Day 2021. I am sure that he would have been delighted that so many people are here tonight to celebrate World Animal Day 2022, and that the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation is continuing its brilliant work.”
