Fairways Primary School in Leigh-on-sea received a visit from local MP Anna Firth last week after concerns that temporary buildings, 1950s ‘Prefab’ styles were still in action 70 years later.
The primary school voted ‘Good’ by Ofsted is a fantastic local school in Southend for children aged 7 to 11. The school is also home to a brilliant Speech and Language therapy specialised double classroom space. Currently taking students from all around South Essex, the school caters to children under Educational Healthcare Plans and supports their speech and language development from Reception age to ensure they are ready and level with non-specialism children to start Year 3 in mainstream catchment education.
Headmaster, Mr L. Pinchback toured the MP and Southend City Council’s Education Portfolio Councillor Helen Boyd around the Prefab builds. While the school have made fantastic efforts to brighten the school classrooms through decorations, there was an unavoidable dreariness to the area. Firth is determined to campaign to the City Council and the Department for Education to gain extra funding.
Commenting, Anna said:
‘I organised the meet with Councillor Boyd, Southend City Council Education Portfolio holder to bring her up to date with local schools funding needs. Boyd has assured me she will go back to the Council to look for ways to improve the school, and I will be lobbying hard in Westminster.
‘Primary education is so important in the development of a child. The speech and language section of the school should be nurtured and positively developed, which is why I encouraged the meet with the Headmaster and eager to tour the school and speak with children and teachers.
