On the 31st August, Anna Firth MP for Southend West, visited Belton Way Small Craft Club in Old Leigh.
Anna was able to visit Belton Way Small Craft Club (BWSCC), in Old Leigh for the very first time. She spoke to the passionate members about their club, the work they do and the phenomenal history of the Old Leigh port. The club are celebrating their 46th anniversary of being based out of their current headquarters. BWSCC have built many of the local boats in Leigh, with some being over 100 years old.
The club’s headquarters will have to be relocated when the renovations and construction begins at the Old Leigh port to regenerate it to its old beauty. Anna is going to try to work with the club to help them find the best transition to a new location.
Anna’s father was a boat and small craft enthusiast, and hence why she is so passionate about the port and the club’s history is upheld.
Anna Firth MP said,
“This is such a fundamental part of our culture in Southend West. The port, the boats and the local community in Old Leigh is so valued by all in Southend. We need to uphold the history we have right on our doorstep, and make sure it lasts for generations to come. The culture we have here really boosts our bid for UK’s City of Culture for 2029.”
