On Tuesday 26th July, Anna Firth MP celebrated the 90th Birthday of Southend Hospital and commemorated this by planting a pink flowering cherry tree. She was joined at the planting by nurses and management staff.
Southend Hospital has a library in the education centre, and it is full of history; with handwritten record books from the Second World War to photo journals of the development of the hospital through the decades. The hospital still has some of the original building still in use.
The hospital played a significant role in the education and training of nurses, with a nursing college on sight. Southend Hospital still to this day has close attachments to education, being so closely linked to the local universities.
Anna said,
“I am so happy to be here to celebrate the 90th Birthday of the hospital, and its such a privilege to be able to plant a tree for the occasion. I looked at the history of the hospital in the education centre, and it is fascinating to see the changes that have been made. I have tirelessly campaigned for extra funding for the hospital and the healthcare services in general in Southend. I will continue to strive for more improvements, so we can have another 90 years of our Southend Hospital”.
