The Southend West MP has called for further action in tackling the threat of terrorism following the conclusion of the Independent Review of the Prevent scheme.
Prevent is a key part of the UK's counter-terrorism strategy. In practical terms, it places public bodies, including schools and the police, under a legal duty to identify people who may turn to extremism, and intervene in their lives before it is too late.
The report identified Islamic terrorism as the primary terrorist threat to the UK and highlighted the need to tackle the ideological drivers of radicalisation over wider issues.
In her question to the Home Secretary on the 8th of February, Anna Firth MP asked for Suella Braverman MP to commit to ensuring that the Prevent programme is overwhelmingly focused on tackling the threat posed by terrorist ideology.
Abi Harli Ali, who murdered her predecessor Sir David Amess, engaged with Prevent between 2014 and 2015 before his case was closed and he was discharged from the scheme
The Home Secretary and Southend West MP were united in their commitment to stop another constituency having to face the tragic loss of such a beloved community figure to evil acts of terrorism.
Anna said,
“This time last year, I had just started in my role as MP for Southend West – taking over from a true legend and the nicest man in the business.”
“Nobody in Southend will ever forget what happened on that tragic day when we lost Sir David. We must never let anyone else suffer that feeling again.
Home Secretary, Suella Braverman said,
“[Anna] reminds us powerfully and poignantly of the tragic implications when we cannot prevent, and our authorities fail to prevent, terrorism.”
